Cultural Activities
The Sixth Form students organise a programme of cultural activities taking in the Theatre, Films, Cabaret Evenings, Music, the Visual Arts and Literature.
Theatre trips
As part of the Culture Vulture Programme, regular theatre trips are organised (normally about three a term). The Lake District is lucky to have two great theatres; The Old Laundry in Bowness and The Theatre by the Lake in Keswick, which provide a full range of plays for students to see.
Film Society
Film Society takes place at school on Fridays at 4pm.
Three films are normally shown each term with the opportunity to discuss different ideas raised by the films and analyse them afterwards.
Film Focus happens once a month at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal and is open to anyone interested in film.
The films are chosen by an expert who works at the centre and are usually popular classics like 'Cabaret'.
It is an informal gathering involving a short introduction to the chosen film, followed by some discussion with the audience about the genre and setting of the film.
It is a really good evening with enjoyable and often thought provoking entertainment.
Music
The Brewery Arts Centre also plays host to many musical acts and the Culture Vultures programme takes advantage of this by organising trips to a range of performances including pop, rock, opera, jazz and reggae.
Cabaret Nights
We hold a Cabaret Night once a term at Westmorland House, usually involving the whole Sixth Form.
The night is hosted by two students who introduce and provide links between each act.
Most people play a part in at least one of the performances such as an improvised sketch, bands or karaoke. There are also quizzes and games in a 'Have I Got News For You' style throughout the night.
The entire evening is very relaxed and light hearted, giving students the opportunity to socialise, while admiring the hidden talents of fellow students.
Visual Arts
Throughout the year a series of trips are organised to local and national art galleries, offering a range of art from different periods and different styles.
Last year students visited The Lowry at Salford, The Stanley Spencer and Tony Bevan exhibitions at Abbot Hall in Kendal and the National Portrait Gallery.
These visits are for everyone, not just for art students and are particularly good for those who would like to learn more about art. Students always receive a talk in the gallery introducing the works on show and then have free time to look at the work in their own way.
Literature Society
Our Literature Society meet once a week for an hour. It is a relaxing time as students usually just read through a novel, stopping to discuss the plot, characters or issues being raised as they read.
Last year students read 'The Great Gatsby', 'Oranges are not the only fruit', and 'The God of Small Things'.![]() ![]() |
