Guardians

Guidelines for Parents

A guardian has two responsibilities: -

1. To act on your behalf, and under your instructions, to support the student at all times and especially in case of any problems or emergencies. These problems or emergencies may occur while the student is at school and could include medical emergencies, disciplinary matters, social or welfare problems, emergency closure of the school, arrangements for activities or travel. The school must have a person they can contact 24 hours of the day and who will act on your behalf and in accordance with your wishes.

2. To take the student into their home when the school is closed for holidays.

Finding a guardian

1. You may have a relative, friend or business associate who will take on the two responsibilities outlined above. The time, expenses and commitment are great and can place a strain on the relative, friend or business associate. Before confirming the arrangement, you must satisfy yourself that the person you ask to be a guardian will: -
a) Be available and willing to receive the student into their home several times a term.
b) Be able to deal with emergencies, including possibly the removal of the student from the school.
c) Be at home when the student is there and provide suitable living and studying facilities, with appropriate insurance cover.
d) Be prepared to negotiate reimbursement of what can be considerable expenses.

2. You can ask a Guardianship Organisation to find a guardian for you. There are a large number of Guardianship Organisations in the United Kingdom. Possible companies to contact are:

Personal Arrangements
The School has a range of services that can assist international students whilst studying in the UK. These services include help with travel, visas, banking and healthcare.

Travel Arrangements
Excellent road, rail and air transport links mean that the school is easily accessible for international students.

Many overseas pupils travel by air using Manchester Airport, which has direct flights to many European and worldwide destinations and is approximately one hour from school.

The school operates a travel service to arrange for you to be accompanied to and from Manchester Airport when you travel.

The North West mainline railway is only 30 minutes away by train from Windermere, giving access to the national rail network and cities such as Manchester, Glasgow and London.

Healthcare
The School has fully trained nurse who is based at school during the day and on call at other times.

International students are registered with a local doctor should they require any healthcare whilst at school.

Personal Banking arrangements
Most international students open personal bank accounts with a UK bank.

Once you have accepted a place at Windermere St Anne's, we can provide you with the necessary documentation to enable you to open an account.

Windermere is well serviced by a range of banks and building societies.
