Watersports
Watersports Curriculum
Year 5 and 6 pupils at Elleray use the Centre during the school day. Year 4 pupils are also given introductory taster sessions.
At the senior school, Year 7 and 8 pupils are timetabled for watersports lessons, as part of the school day, in the activities sessions after 4pm. Year 7 pupils receive an introductory period of initial instruction on their arrival in the autumn.
During the summer term they receive a half term of sailing instruction and a half term of kayaking instruction. Most pupils will work towards taking RYA Level 1/2 Sailing awards and BCU 1/2 star award in kayak.
Most pupils achieve RYA Level 1 and 1 Star BCU certificates by Year 8, with several achieving RYA Level 2 and Two Star BCU awards.
In Year 9 watersports cease to be compulsory and increasingly focus on leisure and recreation classes. However, should they wish to, pupils can progress to higher level awards such as seamanship skills and higher kayak awards, as well as training to be assistant instructors.
In Year 10 and 11 sailing is offered as a GCSE PE option. In the Sixth Form sailing or kayaking is offered as an option during Physical Education time, when it is possible to follow an RYA or BCU course.
Facilities & Equipment
The Watersports Centre has a pavilion with changing and teaching facilities, wet and dry boathouses, a sheltered harbour and beach landing area.
The centre is well equipped with toppers, lasers, wayfarers, canoes and kayaks as well as wetsuits and spray-tops for pupils to use.
There is capacity for operating four groups at any particular time. Two groups work from the boathouse area and two further groups are accommodated from the beach.
Staff operate with a maximum of six pupils per group for teaching sailing and a maximum of eight for teaching kayaks or expert level groups.
Recreational activities
Weekends allow time for pupils to enjoy recreational time at the centre participating in Sailing Races and training. Longer kayak trips and lake journeys are also possible.
Activity Clubs operated include a Sailing Racing Training Group and Kayak Clubs.
Sailing racing is available to all years, but pupils are expected to be a least level 2 competent.
The School races in competitions with both internal races and invitational races held at Windermere St Anne's. The team also travels to other venues.
