Science
Academic Structure
Year 7
In Year 7 Science is taught as a series of Chemistry, Physics and Biology modules.
Pupils are taught in Tutor Groups of mixed ability for two double lessons per week.
The aim of Year 7 is to encourage the development of key skills such as planning investigations, thinking scientifically in order to solve problems, experimental skills and safe use of practical equipment.
It is skills based rather than knowledge based to mirror the national strategy.
Year 8
In Year 8 Science is taught as three separate subjects. Pupils receive one double lesson per science per week. Most lessons are based around practical activities and encourage greater independence in approach.
Year 9
As above but pupils are set into three groups for differentiated learning. SATS are not taken in Year 9 but the work becomes increasingly more slanted towards GCSE material.
Year 10/11 (GCSEs)
As above but there are four double lessons of science per week (one of each plus one which rotates weekly)
The specification followed is that of Edexcel Modular Science, with modules being taken in Year 10 and Year 11. This is double award Science.
