Humanities
At Windermere St Anne's we are in the position of being able to use the National Curriculum as a guide and not a prescriptive document; this allows us to fulfil our requirements to our students but also ensures that the curriculum is tailored to our own needs and requirements. Small groups enable us to focus on the individual within a class.
The Humanities Faculty has a particular focus on the development of student's thinking abilities as we believe that education is more than the gaining of facts and figures; it should be the ongoing development of skills that enable us to look at the world around us and attempt to make sense of it. The Humanities Faculty also starts early in developing the skills that students need in order to make a success of examinations in an attempt to reduce the pressure of public exams.
We are committed to inspiring students to develop an interest in the Humanities subjects by encouraging students to be curious about the world around them. We hope to enable students to appreciate the relevance on a sound Humanities knowledge base in the intertwining of past and present and to think about possibilities for the future. Students will be encouraged to think about their place in the world and the rights and responsibilities that this entails.
Academic Structure
Geography and History are available from Year 7 through to Year 13.
Religious Studies currently runs from Year 7 to 11, with plans to develop this very successful subject into AS and A2. Government and Politics as well as Business Studies are available in the Sixth Form.
Years 7-9 are all taught in their mixed ability form groups. GCSE, AS and A2 groups are taught within their option blocks, (which means they are also mixed ability).
Geography Fieldtrips
Our location allows us to practicably demonstrate many aspects of both physical and human Geography in the environment around us. We also take trips outside of the local area to enable students to see different and often contrasting environments.
Fieldwork is a real strength for the department and until the competition ended in 2002, we came in the top 8 schools nationally in 2001 and 2002 for the Heinneman Coursework Prize for Bristol Project GCSE coursework.
