English

The English Faculty follows the National Curriculum guidelines for English. Pupils are prepared for both English Language and Literature GCSEs and all IB Diploma students take English in the Sixth Form. Our primary aim is to enable students to develop their spoken, reading and writing skills to a high level and to create a strong interest and deep understanding of a wide range of literature. We also believe English should be an exciting and enjoyable subject for all pupils and staff and that our teaching should utilise pupils’ analytical and creative abilities to the full.

Pupils are taught in mixed-ability sets in Year 7. From Year 8, setting is based on ability and progress, which is determined through a variety of school-based assessments. Pupils’ placement into a particular set is regularly reviewed and any changes are decided in consultation with the pupil and parents.

As well as lessons in school, pupils are encouraged to take part in a variety of educational activities within and outside of the school. These include trips to theatres, attending creative writing and poetry workshops and inviting published writers into school.
