A walk to the Woody Giant of Elleray Woods

On our way up the stony track we found a pile of stones where the wall had fallen down.

Where do you think these came from?     I wonder what happened here?    What do you think?

James G. looked up and declared that they had fallen from the tree.  The children then scrambled about on the stones for a few minutes….tried to lift them….noticed the green moss on the longer stones….and then carried on walking up the track.

It had been quite a long time since we last visited the giant and he was covered in leaves.  I scraped them away from the outline and pointed out his body.  I asked the children to pick up sticks or twigs to feed him in his triangle tummy.

Then the children sat at the Giant’s head for a photograph.  Everyone smiled – even the Giant!  I challenged the children to scramble up the steep slope to the path at the top.  Every child tried hard with me supporting from below and Noelia clasping hands at the top.  There were plenty of slips and slides but nobody cried or gave up and we all gave a cheer as “We all did it!”

On the way back I noticed some tracks in the mud.

What has made these footprints in the mud…..I wonder if anyone knows?

Everyone looked but did not reply  What animal made the tracks?….they are made by the animal’s feet

“A horse!”   replied Charlie  Yes…that’s right …the horse has special shoes which make a mark like this in the mud…..I wonder if we will find some more on the path?

As we walked along the children found some more hoof prints and some paw prints from a big dog.  We said “Hello” to a couple walking a small dog which ran up to the children excitedly. We met another man walking a bull terrier (which he immediately put on a lead before reaching the children) and he said “Hello” and the children replied politely.

Just before the school grounds, we pass a small stream which cascades over stones

“Look at the waterfalls…..all the water is going down the hole” said the children.

We arrived back at the Nursery after about an hour.  The children were cold but excited to tell the other staff what they had done.  We enjoyed hot chocolate and marshmallow for our snack…..it warmed us up nicely!
