Clubs and Societies
There are many clubs and societies that meet regularly in activity time. These can change a little from time to time as we work hard to capitalise on staff expertise and to meet student demands and interests.
At the time of writing, the following are regular weekly clubs but not all clubs will operate during the busy summer outdoor term, whist others clubs requiring the outdoors and light will only operate in the summer and early autumn term.
Creative Arts
Art club: is for year 9 pupils and below as all GCSE and A level students are able to use the facilities during their prep time.
Bookbinders Club: is a popular option for all age groups and combines artistic flair with learning a skill.
Craft Club: will provide an opportunity for projects such as greetings card making.
Pottery Club: mainly aimed at Year 9 pupils and below. Space is limited.
Scenery Painting: this happens when scenery is required and only open to those who can assist in the appropriate way.
Prop Making: this again is a seasonal activity that operates prior major school productions.
Design and Technology: a very popular activity so this is operated on a sign up system each week as numbers have to be strickly controlled to meet safety regulations.
Sports Clubs
Judo Club: is open to all but at extra cost as an instructor is employed specifically to run this activity.
Golf Club: a newly introduced club where pupils have the opportunity to have lessons at the local Golf Club.
Swimming Club: the school does not run swimming as a competitive sport, but pupils do join and compete for the very near by Troutbeck Swimming Club. In addition to this a recreational swimming session is organised for year 9 and above pupils who no longer have swimming as part of their curriculum.
Other Clubs and Societies
Book Club/Creative Writing Club: is open to younger pupils and gives them a chance to review books or enjoy writing.
Chess Club: a relatively new but very popular club which is growing rapidly and has already led to the introduction of Inter School Competition.
Debating Society: prepares students for competition, internally, socially and at national level.
Junior French Club: is open to younger pupils giving them a chance to have fun in a learning environment.
French Conversation: this is open GCSE level students.
Maths Club: encouraging the able Mathematician to enjoy and extend their skill. This leads to competition.
Army Cadet Force: our own detachment of the King's Border Regiment.
Weekends
Weekend activities are varied and opportunity is provided for those outdoor activities needing longer hours, sporting fixtures, specialist activities and fun.
Off-site they can vary from Cinema visits, to the more energetic bowling or ice skating, to the hair-raising theme park visit or premier league football match.
On site visiting musicians or dancers can offer their specialist skills, roller balding, or circus skills have been included and evening social events such as discos, karaoke, quizzes and murder mystery evening are regulars.
